De Vloedschotten

🕐 Saturday 26 September, continuous on the Voorstraat

📍 Voorstraat

This year the flood barrier on the Voorstraat is inspected by De Vloedschotten, flown in from the Highlands and equipped with everything the job requires. To bring the dyke up to a safe height, the gaps are measured, tested and certified. Every approved panel is blessed on the spot by bagpipe. Shoppers are kindly asked to allow for a certain amount of hearing damage. Participating shopkeepers pay nothing for the inspection.

Behind that bagpipe stands Jos, Pipe Major of the Breda City Pipes & Drums. He has played his Great Highland Bagpipes for years at festivals and special occasions, with and without the band, and shows that one instrument can be enough.

Thinking afterwards: I want to do that too? The Breda City Pipes & Drums is always looking for new members, and especially for enthusiastic drummers. No experience needed — you learn the craft within the band.
